ニューヨーク・サルサ勃興前夜。ニューヨークに住むアフリカン・アメリカンは燃えていた。

60年代初頭、ニューヨークのアフリカ系アメリカ人の少年をゲットーから引きずり出し、本来の自尊心を取り戻すことを目的として、社会学者や元ゲットー出身者たちによって作られた貧困撲滅法人「Harlem Youth Opportunities Unlimited Inc.」。そのカリキュラムのひとつとして行われた音楽プログラムの集大成がこのHAR-YOU PERCUSSION GROUPである。

マエストロ、MONTEGO JOEの手ほどきを受け、音楽教養の無い少年たちが見事なグルーヴとアンサンブルを披露する。おそらくこのグルーヴは彼らの身体の中から湧き上がってきたものなのだろう。

オリジナルLPは、音楽そのものとしてだけでなく当時の情勢を反映した名作として、今も語り継がれている。
